Claude Skill Builder

Answer a few plain questions and get a correctly structured SKILL.md for Claude, ready to download. Made for beginners who have read what a skill is and want to build their first one.

To generate, sign in and save your own AI provider key once in AI Tools settings.

Describe it in plain words. One or two sentences is plenty. Say what it does and when Claude should use it. We'll name the skill for you.

Most people pick the first option. You can change it later.

Great skills show, not just tell. A short example goes a long way.

Check any outside service it should be able to read from or write to.

What capabilities does it need beyond plain conversation?

The AI also writes working helper scripts in scripts/, reference docs in references/ and templates in assets/, and links them from your SKILL.md. Takes a little longer. Leave this off for a single-file skill.

How to use the Claude Skill Builder

  1. Describe your skill. Write what it does and when Claude should use it, in one or two sentences. You'll know it worked when: the description starts with a verb and names the moment Claude should step in.
  2. Pick a trigger and generate. Choose how the skill should start, then press Generate my skill. You'll know it worked when: a SKILL.md appears in the preview with a name and description at the top.
  3. Download and add it to Claude. Download the .zip, then put the skill folder where Claude loads skills. Check Anthropic's current steps for adding a skill in Claude's settings. You'll know it worked when: the downloaded file opens as plain text with the frontmatter at the top.

Why this works

A Claude skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file inside. The name and description at the top tell Claude when to load it, and the steps below tell Claude what to do. Most first attempts fail because the description is vague or the steps are missing. This Claude skill builder asks for the parts that matter, in plain words, then writes the structure for you. Treat the result as a first draft: read it, change what does not sound like you, and test it in a real chat.

Claude skills FAQ

What is a Claude skill?

A Claude skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches Claude how to do one task your way. Claude reads the short description first and loads the full instructions only when the task matches.

What is the difference between Claude skills and agents?

A skill is a reusable set of instructions for one kind of task. An agent is a setup that plans and carries out a longer job, and it can use skills along the way. You can think of skills as the how-to notes an agent reads.

Can I use Claude skills for free?

This builder is free to try, and you can fill in the form without an account. Generating uses your own AI provider key. Which Claude plans include skills can change, so check Anthropic's site for the current answer.

Will the generated skill work in other AI frameworks?

Yes. The skill is plain Markdown instructions, so the same content works in ChatGPT, OpenClaw, Grok, Zo Computer, Hermes and other AI tools. Claude uses the SKILL.md file as is. For any other tool, paste the instructions into its system prompt, custom instructions or skills folder.

Where do I put my SKILL.md file?

Put it in a folder named after the skill, zip the folder, and add it in Claude's settings. Anthropic updates these steps from time to time, so follow its current instructions.
