The news for the APP developers of the new version of Android that will be released to 0 in September 2017.

As usual, Google released in preview the new version of the operating system that will be called, with the next letter to the N, which is the letter “O”. Still you are not sure on the actual full name that will be used, although some believe is not broken the tradition of using names linked to sweets (cookies Orion). I would say that it is time that Android developers will put “on a diet”!

The first question to ask is: it makes sense to worry about learning the characteristics of the new API? The answer is: it depends. Yes because if your application relies on message notification features , then you need to revise much of your code. For all other features, I would say that they are entirely ancillary.

In order to test the new features, the first thing to do is update Android Studio to version 2.4

From here you can download all of the components using the SDK Manager panel. In particular you will need to download:

  • Android SDK Platform
  • Google APIs Intel x86 Atom System Image

Finally, in the “Tools” tab, you will need to select the following items to install:

  • Android SDK Build-Tools 26.0.0 rc1
  • Android SDK Platform-Tools 26.0.0 rc1
  • Android Emulator 26.0.0
  • Support Repository

Once you have created your first Android project, within the build.gradle files, you will need to change the lines so that “compileSdkversion” parameters, “buildToolsVersion”, “targetSdkVersion”, we have the following values:

Android {
  compileSdkVersion 'Android-O'
  buildToolsVersion '26 .0.0-rc1 '

  {defaultconfig
    targetSdkVersion 'O'
  }
  ...
}

{dependencies
  compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:26.0.0-alpha1'
}

NB: These values you use are under development. Once released the official version, you will need to change them.

As always, the release previews of a new version, there are still many bugs to fix, but this link , you can still keep an eye on the characteristics of the new APIs, especially in reference to the topics below:
