Is Claude AI Free? Every Plan Explained for Beginners

Share:

Claude has a free plan with no credit card needed, and for many beginners it is all they will ever need.

You hear that everyone is using Claude, you open the site, and a worry kicks in: is this going to charge me? It is a fair question, and most answers online are vague. So here is the straight version, in plain words, so you can start today without surprises.

Plans and prices change often. I checked Anthropic's pricing page before writing this, and I tell you where to double-check anything that tends to move.

Is Claude AI free?

Yes. Claude has a free plan, and you do not need a credit card to start. You sign up at claude.ai with your email or Google account and you can chat straight away.

If you are brand new and want the big picture first, read my plain-English guide to what Claude AI is, then come back here.

What does the free plan include?

According to Anthropic's pricing page, the free plan covers everyday questions and includes:

  • Chat on the web, desktop and mobile
  • Web search
  • Artifacts (documents, pages and small tools Claude builds beside the chat)
  • Memory across conversations
  • Connectors to your other apps and tools
  • Skills
  • Up to 5 Projects
  • Access to the Sonnet and Haiku models

That is a lot for $0. For writing, summarizing, learning and planning, many beginners never need more. My beginner setup guide walks you through a useful first session using only what you get for free.

What is not included in the free plan?

The free plan leaves out the heavier tools. Right now that includes:

  • Claude Code, the tool for building software
  • Research, the deeper multi-step research feature
  • Claude in Chrome, which lets Claude work inside your browser
  • The most powerful models. Free covers Sonnet and Haiku, not Opus or Fable.
  • Usage credits, which let you keep going after you hit a limit on paid plans

Cowork, the mode where Claude works through whole tasks on your files, is also a paid-plan feature. My guide to what Claude Cowork is explains when it is worth it.

How many messages do you get on the free plan?

There is no fixed message count. Claude uses a usage limit, and on the free plan it resets on a rolling five-hour window. How fast you use it up depends on how long your conversations are, how big your files are, and which features you use. Anthropic explains the general rules in its help article on usage and length limits.

When I first used Claude every day, the thing I noticed was this: a few short questions barely moved the limit, but pasting in a huge document and asking five follow-ups used it up fast.

10 ways to stretch your free usage

  1. Start a new chat for a new topic. Long chats cost more because Claude rereads the whole conversation.
  2. Put the whole request in one message. Five details in one prompt beat five separate messages.
  3. Paste only the part you need, not the entire document.
  4. Ask for the format you want (a short list, under 150 words) so you do not need a rewrite.
  5. Turn off tools you are not using.
  6. Use Projects to keep your background in one place instead of repeating it.
  7. Fix a weak prompt before sending it. My Claude AI prompt formula helps.
  8. Do heavy work when you are fresh. Long file uploads are the biggest limit-eaters.
  9. Save good answers so you never ask the same thing twice.
  10. Wait for the reset if you hit the limit. It is a five-hour window, not a day.

What do the paid plans add?

Here is the simple picture. Prices are what Anthropic lists as I write this, so confirm them on the pricing page.

Plan Who it is for What it adds
Free Trying Claude and everyday questions Chat, Projects (up to 5), Skills, Sonnet and Haiku
Pro (about $17 to $20 a month) Daily personal or work use At least 5x the usage of Free, Claude Code, Research, unlimited Projects, Opus access
Max (from about $100 a month) People who use Claude all day 5x or 20x the usage of Pro, higher limits and priority access
Team Groups of 2 to 150 people Shared projects, admin controls and central billing
Enterprise Large organizations Extra security, access controls and compliance tools

Should you pay for Claude?

Stay on Free if you use Claude a few times a week for writing, learning and planning and you rarely hit the limit.

Think about Pro if you hit the limit most days, you want Claude Code or Research, or Claude has become part of how you earn money. If you run a business, my guide to Claude for small business shows what a paid plan can pay back.

My own rule: do not pay until the free limit actually gets in your way. Then upgrade for one month and see whether you use the extra.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude free to use forever? The free plan has no time limit as I write this. Anthropic can change plans, so check the pricing page now and then.

Do I need a credit card for the free plan? No. You sign up with an email or Google account.

Is the free plan good enough for beginners? Yes. It includes chat, web search, Projects and Skills, which is plenty to learn on.

Can I use Claude for free on my phone? Yes. The free plan works on web, desktop and mobile, and you can find the apps on the download page.

Can I buy or share a Claude account or API keys to get around limits? Please do not. Selling or sharing accounts and keys can break Anthropic's rules, and it is not worth losing your access.
