What Are Claude Skills? A Plain-English Guide for Beginners

Share:

A Skill is a saved way of doing one job that Claude uses only when your task needs it.

You keep typing the same instructions into Claude: "write it in my tone, keep it short, use these headings, add this footer." Skills are Anthropic's answer to that. You write the instructions once, Claude keeps them on hand, and it uses them when the job calls for it. Here is what that means in plain words, with no coding needed to understand it.

Features and plans change often. I checked Anthropic's Skills help article and its Agent Skills documentation on 11 October 2026, and I point you to them where details can move.

What are Claude Skills?

Anthropic describes Skills as "folders of instructions, scripts, and resources" that Claude loads when it needs them to do a task better. Put simply, a Skill is a saved way of doing one job, written down so Claude can follow it every time.

Examples: "write a client email in my voice," "turn meeting notes into a summary with action items," or "make a slide deck that follows our brand rules."

If you are new to Claude itself, start with my guide to what Claude AI is.

How do Claude Skills work?

Skills load in stages, which Anthropic calls progressive disclosure:

  1. Claude sees a short label. Each Skill has a name and a one-line description. Claude always knows these.
  2. Claude loads the full instructions only when your task matches. If you ask for something a Skill covers, Claude reads that Skill's instructions.
  3. Claude opens extra files only if needed. A Skill can include reference files or scripts, which are used only when the job calls for them.

This keeps Claude fast and focused, because it is not carrying every instruction at once.

What is a SKILL.md file?

Every Skill is a folder with one required file called SKILL.md. At the top it has two fields, a name and a description, and below that, your instructions in plain text. Here is the shape, from Anthropic's documentation:

---
name: your-skill-name
description: What this Skill does and when to use it
---

# Your Skill Name

## Instructions
Step-by-step guidance for Claude to follow.

The description matters most. Claude matches your request against it to decide whether to use the Skill, so it should say what the Skill does and when to use it.

Are Skills the same as prompts, Projects or custom instructions?

No. They solve different problems:

Tool Best for When it applies
Prompt A one-off request Only that message
Project Background files and context for one topic Every chat in that Project
Custom instructions General preferences Every conversation
Skill A repeatable way of doing a specific job Only when it is relevant

My step-by-step guide to Claude AI Projects shows how Projects fit alongside Skills.

What can Claude Skills do?

Anthropic provides ready-made Skills for common document work, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, and Claude uses them automatically when relevant. Partners such as Notion, Figma and Atlassian also offer Skills through the Skills directory.

You can also create your own. These are the Skill ideas I see work best for non-technical people:

When I first tried a Skill, the thing that surprised me was how much shorter my prompts became. I stopped repeating myself.

Which plans include Skills?

According to Anthropic's help article, Skills are available on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans in Claude.ai, and code execution must be enabled. Skills also work in Claude Code and through the API. Anthropic's documentation says uploading your own custom Skill in Claude.ai needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) with code execution turned on. Check the current rules on Anthropic's pricing page, and see my guide on whether Claude AI is free.

Custom Skills do not sync between places. A Skill you add in Claude.ai is not automatically in Claude Code or the API.

How do you find and turn on Skills?

In Claude.ai, open Customize, go to Skills, click the plus button, then choose Browse skills to open the directory. Anthropic's help center also has a guide to creating custom Skills.

Are Claude Skills safe?

Treat a Skill like installing software. Skills can include instructions and scripts, so a bad one could make Claude do things you did not intend. Anthropic's advice is to use Skills from sources you trust, such as ones you made yourself or ones from Anthropic, and to review everything inside a Skill from anyone else before you use it. Never install a Skill that asks for passwords or that you do not understand.

Skills vs Cowork vs Claude Code

Skills are instructions. Cowork and Claude Code are the places where Claude does the work. A Skill can make either of them more consistent. See my plain-English guide to what Claude Cowork is, and Claude Cowork vs Claude Code to choose between them.

Frequently asked questions

What are Skills in Claude? Saved instructions, in a folder, that teach Claude to do one job your way.

Do I need to code to use Skills? No. You can use ready-made Skills with no code, and a simple Skill is just plain text.

Are Skills free? Anthropic's help article lists them on the free plan too, but custom uploads need a paid plan. Check the pricing page.

What is the difference between a Skill and a Project? A Project holds background for one topic. A Skill is a repeatable method that Claude uses only when relevant.

Where can I find Skills? In the Skills directory inside Claude, and in Anthropic's public skills repository.
