PDF Automation

2 - Market Research for PDF Products: Finding What Sells on Gumroad

I once spent two weeks building a PDF nobody asked for. Then I spent 45 minutes researching the next one, and that one made $87 in its first month at $12 a copy.

The difference was not talent. I stopped guessing and started reading the data Gumroad shows you for free.

Here's the exact process:

  1. Search your topic on Gumroad and read the results like a report. Titles, prices, ratings. Products with reviews are proof someone paid. Ten dead listings with zero ratings is also an answer, just not the one you want.
  2. Read competitor reviews before you write a single page. Buyers literally tell you what they wanted and what was missing. Every "I wish it included..." comment is a product feature handed to you free.
  3. Watch the free products. A free PDF with hundreds of downloads means hungry audience. Your paid product is the next step those downloaders are already looking for.
  4. Check demand outside Gumroad too. If nobody is asking about the problem on Google, Reddit, or in WhatsApp groups, Gumroad won't save it. No conversation, no market.
  5. Set a go/no-go deadline. One hour of research, then a decision. Endless research is just procrastination wearing a suit.

This builds directly on picking your niche first, that post is here. And the full roadmap from zero to first sale is here.

The exact prompts I feed into Claude to do this research in under an hour are attached below.

What topic are you researching right now? Drop it and I'll tell you the first thing I'd check on Gumroad.

Assignment

Before you move to Lesson 3, do this:

  1. Take the niche from your Lesson 1 buyer description and search it on Gumroad.
  2. Run Prompt 1 (search results decode) and Prompt 2 (review mining) from the attached prompt pack on what you find.
  3. Find one free product in your niche and run Prompt 3 on it to spot the paid upgrade.
  4. Run Prompt 6, the go/no-go verdict, using everything above.

Submit: Reply on this thread with your GO or NO-GO verdict and the single biggest reason behind it. If it's a GO, share the product title and subtitle. If it's a NO-GO, share the adjacent idea you're pivoting to.

It's a go. There are already several student and exam planners on Gumroad with real ratings and reviews, including products specifically focused on exam preparation. The biggest opportunity I see is to make mine more focused instead of creating another general student planner. Product: 30-Day Exam Rescue Planner Subtitle: A simple day-by-day revision planner for students who have multiple exams coming up and don't know what to study first.
