Free AI Cover Letter Generator Skill: Write a Tailored Letter in 60 Seconds

Free AI Cover Letter Generator Skill: Write a Tailored Letter in 60 Seconds

Most cover letters are generic rewrites of the same template, and hiring managers can tell. This skill reads the job description and your resume, then writes a tailored 250-400 word letter that mirrors the job language and matches your real background.

Most people reuse the same cover letter for every job application. They swap the company name, adjust one sentence, and send it off. Hiring managers recognize this immediately. Generic letters get filtered by applicant tracking systems before a human ever reads them, and the ones that do make it through rarely stand out. The result is weeks of applications with no callbacks.

The AI cover letter generator skill changes that. You give it your resume and the job description. It reads both, extracts the key requirements, mirrors the job's language, and writes a tailored 250-400 word letter that sounds like you spent an hour on it. The whole process takes under 60 seconds.

What Is a Skill File? What Does the Cover Letter Generator Do?

A skill file is a structured instruction set that tells your AI agent how to complete a specific task from start to finish. When you install a skill, your agent follows its workflow without you having to re-explain the process each time. You can read more about how skill files work at the Agent Skills specification.

The Cover Letter Generator is part of a five-skill AI job application series on this site. If you are new to AI tools in general, the beginner's guide to using Claude AI is a good starting point before installing your first skill.

What the AI Cover Letter Generator Skill Does

The skill handles the full cover letter writing process in six steps.

1. Gathers Your Inputs

The skill collects three things: the job description (paste the text, drop in a URL, or upload the posting), your resume as a PDF or markdown file, and optional tone preferences such as formal, conversational, or confident. If you have already run the AI Recruiter Extractor skill and have the hiring manager's name, you can pass that directly and the letter will address them by name instead of a generic greeting.

2. Analyzes the Job Description

The skill reads the full job posting and pulls out the company name, job title, required and preferred qualifications, key phrases, and any company values or mission language included in the listing. These phrases matter because ATS systems score applications by keyword match before a recruiter ever opens the file.

3. Matches Your Resume to the Role

From your resume, the skill identifies the skills that overlap with the job requirements, the relevant roles and projects in your history, any education or training that fits, and quantified accomplishments like percentages, revenue figures, or team sizes. Numbers always strengthen a cover letter, and the skill surfaces whatever you already have documented.

4. Writes the Letter

The skill produces a 250-400 word letter with a four-paragraph structure. The first paragraph hooks the reader with something specific about the company. The second matches your top three or four achievements directly to the job's key requirements. The third shows alignment with the company's mission or culture. The fourth is a concise call to action. The letter mirrors the job's language for ATS compatibility, uses active voice throughout, and never invents experience you do not have.

5. Saves the Output

The finished letter saves to Documents/job-search/applications/[company]-[role]-cover-letter.md in your workspace, named by company and role so you can track which letter went where across multiple applications.

6. Reports Gaps and Next Steps

After writing the letter, the skill tells you which job requirements you fully meet and which ones you only partially match. That gap list is useful preparation before the interview. The skill also suggests pairing with the AI Resume Editor skill to tailor your CV for the same role before sending anything out.

Who Is This AI Cover Letter Generator Skill For?

People applying to multiple jobs at once. Writing a genuinely tailored letter for each of ten or twenty roles from scratch takes hours. This skill cuts that to under a minute per application while keeping each letter specific to the role.

Career changers. When your background does not map directly onto a new field, a well-written cover letter bridges the gap by framing your transferable skills in the right language. The skill handles this automatically by reading your resume and the job requirements side by side.

Anyone who dislikes writing cover letters. Most people know what they want to say but struggle to phrase it professionally without sounding stiff or robotic. The skill handles the writing. You read it, approve it, or ask for tweaks.

People who want interview preparation built in. The gap analysis the skill produces after writing the letter tells you exactly which requirements you do not fully meet, so you can prepare specific answers before the interview rather than guessing on the day.

Anyone building a full job search system. This skill is step three in the complete AI job application pipeline. The pipeline guide shows you how to chain all five skills together, from finding the listing to sending the finished application, inside a single AI session.

A Note from Me

I built this skill because the biggest time drain in a job search is not finding roles, it is the writing. What I love most about how it works is the gap analysis at the end: before you walk into an interview, you already know exactly which requirements the interviewer is likely to push on.
