Claude Projects vs Skills vs Cowork: Which One Do You Need?

Share:

A Project is what Claude knows, a Skill is how it does a job, and Cowork is a job it carries out. Here is a 4-question test to choose.

You open Claude and see three things that sound alike: Projects, Skills and Cowork. All three help Claude work better for you, so which one should you use? Pick the wrong one and you waste a week setting up something that does not fit the job. This guide gives you a simple way to choose, with plain examples and a short decision test you can run in a minute.

I checked Anthropic's help articles on Projects, Skills and Cowork on 11 October 2026. Plans and menus change often, so I point you to the official pages for anything that can move.

The short answer

  • Use a Project when Claude needs to know background about one topic, such as a client, a brand or a course.
  • Use a Skill when you want Claude to do one job the same way every time, such as a weekly report in your format.
  • Use Cowork when you want to hand Claude a whole multi-step task and let it work through files and tools, such as sorting a folder of invoices into a summary.

One simple way to remember it: a Project is what Claude knows, a Skill is how Claude does a job, and Cowork is a job Claude carries out for you.

What is a Claude Project?

A Project is a self-contained workspace. Anthropic's help article says Projects have their own chat histories and knowledge bases. Inside one you can add two things:

  • Project knowledge: documents, text, code or other files Claude can use as context.
  • Project instructions: instructions that tailor Claude's answers, such as a formal tone or a specific role.

Every new chat in the Project starts with that background already in place, so you stop re-explaining yourself. If you want the full setup, my guide to how to use Claude AI Projects walks through it.

According to Anthropic, Projects are available to all users, including free accounts, with a limit of five projects on the free plan. Sharing a project is available on Team and Enterprise plans.

Best for: ongoing work on one subject, like a client account, a brand voice or a research topic.

What is a Claude Skill?

A Skill is a saved set of instructions, kept in a folder, that teaches Claude how to do a specific job. Claude uses it when your request matches. If this is new to you, read what Claude Skills are first.

Anthropic's help article lists Skills on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and says they require code execution to be turned on. Uploading your own custom Skill needs a paid plan, so check my guide on whether Claude AI is free.

Best for: a repeating job with fixed steps, a fixed layout or fixed rules.

What is Claude Cowork?

Anthropic describes Claude Cowork as bringing the agentic abilities of Claude Code to knowledge work, without a terminal. You describe an outcome, and Claude plans and carries out multi-step tasks, such as organizing files, creating spreadsheets or presentations, or pulling research together.

Cowork needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), according to Anthropic. On the desktop app it can read and write files in folders you connect, and it has to ask before permanently deleting files. You can also set tasks to run on a schedule. For a beginner walkthrough, read what Claude Cowork is.

Best for: a job with several steps that touches your files or tools, where you would rather delegate than copy and paste.

How to choose: 4 questions

Ask yourself these in order and stop at the first yes:

  1. Do I repeat the same job with the same steps every week? Use a Skill.
  2. Does Claude keep needing the same background about one client, brand or topic? Use a Project.
  3. Is it a multi-step job with files, where I want Claude to do the work and show me the result? Use Cowork.
  4. Is it a one-off question? Use a normal chat. You do not need any of them.

If you answered yes to more than one, that is normal. The next section shows how they fit together.

Real examples: which one for which job

  • "Write posts in my brand voice, always." Project for the brand guide, plus a Skill for the post format.
  • "Turn meeting notes into a summary every Friday." Skill.
  • "Remember everything about my client Sam's account." Project.
  • "Sort 200 invoices into folders and make a summary sheet." Cowork.
  • "Send me a Monday briefing." Cowork, using a scheduled task.
  • "Answer customer emails the way I would." Project with your policies, plus a Skill for the reply format.

Can you use all three together?

Yes, and the best setups do. A simple example for a small business owner:

  1. A Project called "My business" holds your offer, your audience and your tone.
  2. A Skill called "weekly-report" holds the steps and layout of your Friday report.
  3. Cowork runs the task: collect this week's files, apply the weekly-report Skill and save the summary in a folder.

Anthropic's Cowork notes also mention projects inside Cowork, which give a task its own files and instructions. See their article on organizing your tasks with projects in Claude Cowork. If you also use Claude Code, my guide to Claude Cowork vs Claude Code explains where that fits.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a repeating method inside a Project. A Project holds background. If you need the same steps every time, write a Skill.
  • Making one giant Skill. A Skill should do one job. Make several small ones.
  • Using Cowork for a quick question. A normal chat is faster for a quick question.
  • Giving Cowork your whole computer. Connect one folder at a time and read the plan before you approve it. My honest advice: start small.
  • Skipping the test. Try each setup on harmless data before you trust it with real client work.

Your next step

Write down the three tasks you ask Claude to do most often. Run the four questions from this post on each one, and set up only the first one today. The free chooser below has a worksheet and a ready-made set of examples to copy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Claude Projects and Skills?

A Project is a workspace that holds background files and instructions for one topic, so Claude knows the context. A Skill is a saved set of steps for one repeating job, which Claude uses when your request matches. In short, a Project is what Claude knows and a Skill is how it does a job.

Is Claude Cowork the same as a Claude Project?

No. A Project holds background and chat history for a topic. Cowork is a mode where Claude plans and carries out multi-step tasks, such as organizing files or building a spreadsheet. Anthropic also has projects inside Cowork, which give a task its own files and instructions.

Can I use Projects, Skills and Cowork together?

Yes. A common setup is a Project for your business background, a Skill for a repeating job like a weekly report, and a Cowork task that collects your files, applies the Skill and saves the result.

Which one should a beginner start with?

Start with a Project if Claude keeps needing the same background, or a Skill if you repeat the same job with the same steps. Try Cowork when you have a multi-step task with files. Not sure? Run the four-question test in this guide.

Do Projects, Skills and Cowork work on the free plan?

According to Anthropic, Projects are available to all users, including free accounts, with five projects on the free plan. Skills are listed on all plans, though uploading your own custom Skill needs a paid plan. Cowork needs a paid plan. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current details.
