8 - Building an Email List While Selling PDFs on Gumroad

I sold to the same buyer 3 times last quarter. Not because I got lucky, because I had a way to reach them again after the first sale. A Gumroad sale without a list is a one-time transaction. A list turns it into a relationship.

For months I didn't bother, told myself I'd "start the list later" once I had more products. That was backwards. The best time to start is your very first sale, because every buyer who trusted you once is more likely to buy from you again than a stranger is to buy the first time.

How I actually built mine, without a marketing budget:

  1. Turn your PDF into the lead magnet, not just the product. Inside the PDF itself, one line near the end: "want the next one free/early? Join here." The people most likely to sign up are the ones who already paid you and liked what they got.
  2. Use Gumroad's own follow feature first, it's already there. Every buyer can follow your Gumroad profile, which is a free, built-in list you're probably ignoring. Mention it on your product page, not just in checkout.
  3. Pick a free email tool built for this, don't overthink it. Kit's free tier covers up to 10,000 subscribers and includes a basic landing page, more than enough until you're well past your first 50 products sold. Check current regional payment support before committing if you plan to upgrade later.
  4. Run WhatsApp as your second list, not a replacement. Email open rates are honest but low. A lot of my audience checks WhatsApp more than email. A short broadcast list for buyers who opt in catches the ones who'd never open an email.
  5. Write a 3-message welcome sequence, not a newsletter you'll abandon. Message 1: thank you plus one quick win. Message 2 (2 days later): a story or lesson related to your niche. Message 3 (5 days later): your next product or a related resource. After that, only email when you actually have something worth their time.

The list isn't for blasting every product at everyone. It's for the handful of buyers who already said yes once, who are the cheapest sale you'll ever make.

The lead-magnet line, welcome sequence, and the prompts I use to write each message are attached below.

Do you have a list yet, or are you still selling one-off with no way to reach past buyers?
