I sold my first PDF with zero followers, zero ad budget, and one WhatsApp group. Marketing a digital product doesn't need an audience first, it needs the right 3 or 4 places, done properly, before you spread thin.
I made the mistake early on of trying to be everywhere at once, one post on Twitter, one on Facebook, one on Instagram, all half-effort, all ignored. Once I picked fewer channels and went deeper on each, sales actually showed up.
The 5 channels that have actually sold PDFs for me:
- Community forums, like this one. Not a drive-by link drop, a real post that helps first (this whole series is that). People buy from people who already gave them something useful for free. My first $9 came from exactly this.
- WhatsApp groups you're already in. Not spam, one honest share when it's relevant to the group's topic, with the result you got, not just the link. This converts better than any paid platform for a Nigerian audience because trust is already built into the group.
- A short thread on X, not a single tweet. One tweet with a link gets ignored. A 5 to 7 tweet thread that teaches one useful thing, then links your product at the end, gets read because it gives before it asks.
- Your Gumroad listing itself, treated as a search page. Buyers search Gumroad and Google directly for terms like "freelance pricing template" or "PDF automation guide." Your title and description from the store setup post are doing SEO work whether you planned it or not, so use the exact words your buyer would type.
- Bundling or cross-promoting with another small creator. Find someone selling a complementary product (not a competitor) to your same buyer, and swap a shoutout or a small bundle deal. Their audience already trusts them, that trust transfers faster than any ad.
None of these need a budget, they need consistency. I still post in 2 to 3 of these every week, even after having repeat buyers, because the channel that sold yesterday isn't guaranteed to sell tomorrow.
The exact outreach message templates I use for each channel (forum post opener, WhatsApp share, thread hook, bundle-offer DM) are attached below.
Which of these 5 have you actually tried, and which one worked best for you?
